Personal Connection With Punjabi Comfort Foods

Belonging to a Punjabi family has given me the opportunity to make a long list of my comfort foods that are integral to our culture and customs. These foods occupy a special place in my heart because they remind me of happy occasions, family reunions, and the comforting embrace of love.

Winter evenings in our Punjabi home would be filled with the comforting smells of freshly cooked sarson da saag and makki di roti. With a spoonful of homemade  butter on top, the saag serves as a constant reminder of my roots and a taste of home.

I grew up enjoying the warm comfort of rajma chawal as a Punjabi. It is a timeless tune that soothes the body as well as the mind. Chole bhature’s wonderful aroma never fails to put a smile on our faces. It’s a meal that unites the entire family at the table to share this delicious and nourishing feast. There is no other meal that my young nephew enjoys as much as those bhaturas. And I can’t forget the beloved masala chai, which soothes you with each sip of its heady concoction of tea leaves, spices, milk, and a hint of sweetness.

Comfort food has often been associated with concerns about weight gain. However, let’s take a closer look at the relationship between comfort food and our waistlines to separate fact from fiction.

Emotional Eating Awareness

Comfort food is often sought after during times of emotional distress. However, it’s essential to be mindful of emotional eating and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Engaging in activities like exercise, meditation, or talking to loved ones can help address emotional needs without solely relying on food for comfort.

Balanced Lifestyle Choices

Weight gain is not solely determined by one specific type of food. It’s the overall balance of our dietary choices and lifestyle that plays a significant role. Regular physical activity, a well-rounded diet, and mindful eating practices are essential components in maintaining a healthy weight, even when enjoying comfort foods occasionally.

Mindful Indulgence

Rather than mindlessly enjoying comfort food, practicing mindful eating can make a difference. Relish each bite, fully appreciate the flavors and textures, and listen to your body’s signals of satisfaction. Being present during the eating experience can help prevent overeating and promote a healthier relationship with comfort food.

Embrace the comfort and joy of food

The beauty of comfort food is found not only in its taste but also in its ability to uplift our moods and make us feel good. Whether you’ve been on a long journey or returned home from hostels, the first thing you often do is ask your mothers to prepare your favorite meals. The familiar tastes and aromas of those dishes bring a sense of comfort and delight they evoke. Our roots, our memories, and our sense of self may all be found in comfort food.

  1. We Indians are blessed with diversity in food system. Yea its true that comfort food gives happiness and contentment (Eating our favorite dishes can be a form of self-care, helping us feel better and more content) and food has the magic power to change our mood, but i also feel it’s not the case everytime.
As i am from South region of India and living in north presently, North India has a very different style of food system and being a south Indian it was a considerable challenge for me to survive here with north Indian food, many times i used to feel low that i don’t have the luxury of comfort food.
But with time these North indian dilicious food items like paratha with butter and chilly momos thought me to be open to other food sytem and they even brought more joy than my south Indian idli dosa.
Non comfort food has played imp role in teaching me adoptability ,embrasing diversity and adjusting attitude.
It was a nice topic to talk about Poonam, Thank you!!

    1. I can understand the challenges you might have encountered staying in North India where the food choices vary completely from the simple delicacies of South India. With the choices also available in the menu I am certain the it might have been difficult for you to get that authentic taste.

I am glad that you have developed some taste for those buttery parathas and spicy momos which are the top favorite of almost every one here.

But nothing can be as satiating as your own comfort food and I attest to that fact based on my own experience..
